TL;DR: Amazon redesigned its Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft with flush-front screens, edge-to-edge color finishes, aluminum options and new page-turn accessories, with prices from $149.99 to $319.99.

Amazon refreshes all three Kindles at once

Amazon introduced a completely redesigned Kindle family on Oct. 1, 2026, covering the base Kindle, Kindle Paperwhite and Kindle Colorsoft, according to About Amazon. The announcement framed the update as a ground-up rethink centered on a reverse-stack display construction described as a first for the e-reader category.

Every model now uses a flush-front display with no raised border around the reading surface, creating a continuous page from bezel to screen. The exterior color now wraps from front to back, so the chosen finish remains visible from either side, according to About Amazon. GSMArena described the same change as seamless flush displays paired with optional aluminum backs, thinner and lighter profiles and longer-lasting batteries.

The three lines also share faster page handling and a relocated control. The new Kindles open books 30% faster than the previous release, according to About Amazon, while GSMArena tied that 30% improvement specifically to the 12th-generation base model versus the 11th-generation device. The power button has moved from the bottom edge to the right edge near the top, according to The Verge, a change GSMArena described as repositioning to the right-hand side.

Amazon Vice President of Devices Kevin Keith authored the company announcement. In remarks reported by The Verge, Keith said the new models use user-replaceable batteries to comply with European Union regulations.

Base Kindle gets smallest body and first aluminum option

The all-new 6-inch Kindle is described by Amazon as the most pocket-sized Kindle the company has made. It includes 16GB of storage, up to six weeks of battery life on a single charge and a flush-front assembly that required reworking how the display, front light and touch layers are bonded, according to About Amazon.

The entry configuration starts at $149.99 in Ube and Graphite, according to About Amazon. GSMArena listed the same starting point at $150 for Ube and graphite-black finishes with 16GB of storage. Ube is characterized as a rich purple hero color, according to About Amazon, while GSMArena called it a deep purple shade.

For the first time, the compact Kindle is also offered with an aluminum back. The aluminum version keeps the same 6-inch form factor and flush-front display but adds a different exterior feel and doubles storage to 32GB, according to About Amazon. It is priced at $189.99 in Alpine Sky Aluminum and Seaglass Green Aluminum, with housing made from 80% recycled aluminum with a matte finish. GSMArena listed that aluminum configuration at $190 with 32GB of storage.

The standard housing uses recycled materials with a 100% recycled cobalt battery, according to About Amazon. GSMArena reported that all versions of the 12th-generation Kindle are 1 mm thinner than the prior generation, with plastic models weighing 140 grams and aluminum-back versions weighing 20 grams more.

The updated base Kindle was available immediately at launch. The Verge reported that it was available Oct. 1 starting at $149.99 with 16GB and lockscreen ads, while the aluminum version at $189.99 doubles storage and omits ads.

Paperwhite adds contrast and battery life

The all-new Kindle Paperwhite remains the 7-inch waterproof option with an adjustable warm light for reading at different hours, according to About Amazon. Battery life is rated at up to 12 weeks on a single charge, a figure repeated by GSMArena for the seventh-generation Paperwhite.

Amazon said the Paperwhite display uses an oxide thin-film-transistor backplane and called it the largest Paperwhite display with the highest contrast ratio in the line, intended to deliver deep blacks, crisp text and images that remain legible in bright sunlight or at night, according to About Amazon. GSMArena likewise reported the same 7-inch e-ink size as before with an improved contrast ratio aimed at better reading in sunlight.

The standard Paperwhite offers 16GB of storage in Graphite starting at $199.99, according to About Amazon. GSMArena listed the same $200Kes standard configuration with 16GB in Graphite.

The Signature Edition adds an aluminum rear housing, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, pogo-pin dock charging and double-tap page turning, while remaining thinner than the previous version, according to About Amazon. It is priced at $249.99 with 32GB in Graphite and Seaglass Green. GSMArena reported the same $250 Signature configuration with an aluminum back, auto-adjusting front-light sensor and 32GB.

The Verge noted that display specifications for Paperwhite had not changed, although color coverage and materials were new. It also reported that Paperwhite and Colorsoft models announced Oct. 1 were scheduled for release Oct. 28 and available to preorder, correcting an initial impression that they were on sale immediately.

Colorsoft brings paper-like color to comics and guides

The new Kindle Colorsoft is positioned for color covers, travel guides, comics and graphic novels, with Amazon describing the result as paper-like color intended to remain comfortable for extended reading without tablet glare, according to About Amazon.

The technical approach includes a light guide with nitride LEDs to improve color and brightness without washing out detail, an oxide backplane with custom waveforms for responsiveness and contrast in color and black-and-white content, micro-deflectors to reduce stray light and improve uniformity, and an ultra-thin optical coating to improve clarity, according to About Amazon. The redesigned display uses the lineup-wide reverse-printing approach for edge-to-edge color.

The standard Colorsoft offers 16GB of storage in Graphite starting at $289.99, according to About Amazon. GSMArena listed the second-generation Colorsoft starting price at $290. The Colorsoft Signature Edition adds aluminum housing, 32GB of storage, an auto-adjusting front light, double-tap page turning and pogo-pin dock charging, according to About Amazon. It is available in Graphite and Fig at $319.99, while GSMArena listed the Signature Edition at $320.

Fig is newly brought to e-readers with this lineup, according to About Amazon. GSMArena specifically associated the new Fig option with the Colorsoft alongside Graphite, with a Signature version offering an aluminum back.

The Verge reported that stated color performance was similar to the prior-generation Colorsoft model.

Color wraps edge to edge through new display stack

A central design theme is that color is no longer confined to the rear shell. Amazon said a black layer applied between the panel edges helps prevent case color from visually bleeding onto the screen, a technique credited by Amazon executive Kevin Keith in reporting by The Verge. That treatment allows plastic and aluminum finishes to cover the full device rather than only the back.

The resulting palette includes Ube, Alpine Sky, Seaglass Green and Graphite, with Fig added for the first time on e-readers, according to About Amazon. GSMArena listed Ube, graphite black, Alpine Sky and Seaglass Green for the base Kindle, with the latter two tied to aluminum backs, plus Graphite and Seaglass Green for Paperwhite Signature and Graphite and Fig for Colorsoft Signature.

The Verge emphasized that the base screen still can appear recessed at a glance but is flush with the bezel, enabled by the seamless transition from frame to screen. GSMArena pointed to more rounded corners on the 6-inch base model as part of the same flush-display change.

Amazon linked the redesign to continued demand for distraction-free reading. Kindle has posted double-digit global growth for three consecutive years, with more than 720 billion pages read in 2025, according to About Amazon.

Page-turn remote, button case and dock expand setup

Amazon introduced two distinct page-turning accessories alongside the readers. The Kindle Click is a $34.99 Bluetooth remote that turns pages from a distance and includes side-mounted controls for screen brightness, according to The Verge. About Amazon described it more broadly as a Bluetooth page-turn remote in its list of new accessories.

The remote uses soft, quiet main buttons, includes a wrist strap and recharges over USB-C, according to The Verge. It is compatible with Kindles released from 2024 onward, according to both The Verge and GSMArena, which listed the Kindle Click price at $35.

The second accessory is a $79.99 magnetic page-turning cover with physical buttons, evoking the former Kindle Oasis approach, according to The Verge. It connects through pogo pins on the rear of the Signature Edition Paperwhite and Colorsoft models, which also support an optional charging dock. Amazon will sell a $59.99 charging dock that charges those Signature editions upright through pogo pins, according to The Verge. Both Signature models retain a USB-C port, while wireless charging is not offered in the new Signature Editions.

The Verge also evaluated an aluminum base Kindle with a $49.99 magnetic folio case, totaling $239.98 together, placing that combination near the $199.99 Paperwhite with its higher pixel density and auto-dimming screen. It noted that aluminum models slid when placed against a magnetic surface during a hands-on test, while the optional cover held firmly.

GSMArena summarized the accessory additions as a Bluetooth page-turn remote called Kindle Click and a magnetic attachment system, consistent with Amazon’s framing of a magnetic case with integrated page-turn buttons.
